I love digging holes on the beach so this is taking it to another level.
I've always thought if i brought wood to stop the sides from collapsing then i could a brilliant underground room so this led me to dream of a bench hut with a double basement, however it turned out harder than expected.

OK, I know this is an old video, and you lived thru this ridiculous stunt, but the unit weight of that sand is approx 110 pcf (pounds per cubic foot), So if you the sand would happen to shear (collapse) toward your box, the lateral soil pressure, at 10’ down, would be 1100 psf (pounds per square foot). That plywood box is in no way strong enough to withstand that type of soil pressure. In other words, you are lucky you didn’t get buried alive....
Unsafe. He needs to put 2x4 spreaders. It can still cave in on him even with the plywood. He can potentially get killed. Do not try doing this!!!

I"m curious as to why he didn't just dig the considerably larger than necessary, put the lumber in and then fill in around the sides.

No reinforced earth. That which you see in retaining walls and tunnels doesn't seem to be present in your structure. Few good long nails or thing wedges with a flat on the back and you can keep this simple in some hypothetical next time.
